Indiana Extension
Whether you owe additional tax or are due a refund, you need to get an extension if you're filing an Indiana tax return after April 15, 2021.
If you owe additional Indiana tax...
You can either file a federal extension and automatically receive an Indiana extension or you can file Indiana's extension Form IT-9. We recommend you file Form IT-9 and send in a payment to cover the additional Indiana tax you owe.
You must file an extension form by April 15, 2021, for the extension
to be valid.
After you file for an extension, make sure to file your Indiana tax return by Nov. 14, 2021 and pay any remaining balance due with that filing. While interest is
due on any amount paid after April 15, 2021, penalty will be waived if both
of the following conditions are met:
- The remaining balance is paid in full by Nov. 14, 2021.
- You paid at least 90 percent of the tax expected to be owed by the
original April 15 due date.
If you don't owe additional Indiana tax...
You'll still need to file for an extension if you are unable to file your return by April 15, 2021. If you have a valid federal extension, you automatically have an extension with Indiana and don't have to file for a separate state extension. If you don't have a valid federal extension, file Indiana's extension
Form IT-9 by April 15, 2021.
